Our department provides graduate students with a comprehensive education program that reflects the department’s diverse research activities in astrophysics, planetary science, material science, and biology. Through the program, our graduate students are able to acquire full and flexible scientific capability and a broad perspective with which to tackle research.

All professors and associate professors in our department give lectures on our Master's Program, which are designed to allow our graduate students to master the basics of each research field. Master’s students are also required to participate in seminars held by their own research group; these will help students to identify their own unique areas of research. Each Master’s Program lecture is repeated at least in every two years, ensuring that all graduate students can attend all lectures during their two-year period of enrollment. Both lectures and seminars alike are crucial steps toward the completion of a Master’s thesis. Studying each of the diverse research fields which make up the Department of Earth and Space Science also helps our graduates in their future professions, whatever that might be. The department also offers a rich curriculum in the Physics Department as well as other departments, and our graduate students are encouraged to take these courses, too, under the advice of their supervisor. The department has also given special lectures on "Relations between Science and Technology and Present-day Society".

In the Doctoral Program, each research group holds special seminars as well as short-term special lectures. Graduate students mostly work on their own research theme in order to complete their doctoral thesis. Students are awarded a Ph.D. on completion of a doctoral thesis and final examination, which is effectively a license to go forward and carry out activities as an independent researcher.
